I Think The Book of Boba Fett is in Trouble

This link leads to a google trends search.

It compares the number of searches between three different IPs that all had major launches in the past 30 days.* The Witcher, Matrix Resurrections, and The Book of Boba Fett.

I must emphasize that this is a very crude tool, for instance, people googling showtimes and ticket prices for the Matrix are going to increase the peak spike of searches past what the Witcher can do in terms of general inquiries.

Regardless, it’s a reasonably good way of determining general interest. And as you can see, after the series launch there is little to be found for The Book of Boba Fett.

I will say right now that this doesn’t tell us what the actual streaming numbers are because there is no way in hell Disney will release those. But I will say, if bottles of champagne were being opened at Fort Mickey we’d know about it by now.

The potential drawbacks of any Boba Fett series should have been obvious from the start. As I’ve said before Boba Fett’s appeal was always mystery. He lost a huge chunk of his mojo when he fell into the pit before doing damn near anything at all. Note for George Lucas, if you were going to kill off Boba then it should have been in a high noon walk down with Han Solo.

The Mandalorian recovered a lot of the Boba Fett mystique when it launched but they made the mistake of hiring a narcissistic asshole of an actor who insisted on showing his face more times than the ideal number of NEVER. Honestly, they should have hired a stuntman and voiceover actor who wouldn’t want his face seen.

This guy would have made a great Boba Fett.

Getting back to The Book of Boba Fett. It’s possible to recover from a bad start but I don’t know how they will manage it. Although, I wouldn’t be shocked by a Han Solo appearance by the end of season 1.

If Google Trends reflects real world interest than this is a major fail for Faverau and Filoni. The Bad Batch didn’t generate much interest either. If they don’t get a big win soon, they will be out.

After that who knows what happens?

Will Kathleen Kennedy and her Star Wars Story Group start throwing their weight around again?

Will there be a High Republic series?

Will Rey get a new trilogy?

Or will Disney just give up and sell off Lucasfilm?

Always in motion is the future. But when all is said and done…

… It could be worse for Boba Fett.

*I excluded Spiderman after my first search because it blew everything out of the water.

UPDATE: No, I’m not going to tell you what the red line means in the second link. Try reading.
