Deadpool Drama

You’ve probably been hearing something about a lot of behind-the-scenes shrieking and screaming due to an extended version of Deadpool and Wolverine.

Here’s what’s going on.

Deadpool started shooting in early 2023, was interrupted because of the SAG strike but resumed and was finished in November of 2023. Those dates are important. Because of the strike, there were several actors who had been signed but became unavailable. So their characters had to be cut. Patrick Stewart for instance was set to reprise Professor X but became unavailable which is why his twin sister is in this but the Prof himself isn’t.

The delay also coincided with a tectonic shift at Marvel. When the film was in preproduction Victoria Alonso was still working at Marvel. She made sure her magic touches were included in this film.

There was a scene shot where Captain Marvel and She-Hulk beat the living hell out of Deadpool and Wolverine. Lecture them about their failures as men and generally speaking put them in their place and make them stay in their lane. They completely humiliated the title characters in their own film. It was the usual M-She-U bullshit. She-Hullk had several moments where she broke the fourth wall.

Because of the SAG-Aftra strike filming didn’t conclude until November. And that was when The Marvels crashed and burned. There had been underperformances that year like Antman 3, but if you don’t know about how a film has to pretty much triple its budget before it’s in the black these days it could be made to look like it had broken even. The Marvels was too big of a disaster for anything like that. Everyone could see it had bombed. Feige was fighting for his life at that point.

Ryan Reynolds was now in a position to throw his weight around. Neither he nor the director had been happy about Captain Marvell and She-Hulk being shoehorned into Deadpool. Tests audiences for that scene had loathed and detested it. Reynolds went up against Marvel, and Iger decided to let it be cut. Which explains why Feige tried to take the wind out of Deadpool’s sails at Comicon with his Robert Downey reveal.

Ryan Reynolds now has enough mojo that he was able to get rid of the Brie Larson and Tatiana Maslany footage, entirely. It will not be appearing in the deleted scenes on the physical copy either. Which means that Larson and Maslany aren’t going to get paid for that. Maslany had been shrieking behind the scenes about being cut from the movie in the first place. Larson had apparently been more realistic about her character’s unpopularity after the Marvels crashed and burned.

However, she’s now joining her voice to Maslany’s about being cut from the Blu-Ray.

There isn’t the slightest chance that the scene will be included in any form but if Larson and Maslany kick up rough enough Disney will pay them to shut up about it.

There you are. That’s what was going on.
