Oscar Predictions 2023
First, the award show is going to suck unless Will Smith slaps somebody else.
Second, Marvel will take home its first serious Oscar. They’ve won for technical awards before… I think… Honestly, I didn’t check, and I don’t need to, it’s the only thing the Academy would give to a popular movie. So, Marvel almost certainly won for one of those non-serious awards
Anyway, Angela Basset is going to win for Best Supporting Actress for Wakanda: Forever. Was her performance Oscar-worthy? Well, it was the best thing in the movie but, no. However, she did turn in a performance she should have worn for her 1993 portrayal of Tina Turner but she got snubbed and the Academy wants to make up for it now because they do this crap all the time. Al Pacino got snubbed for Godfather so they could give a retirement award to Art Carney. Then they gave it to Pacino for something I don’t remember.
Bottomline: The only way Marvel could win a serious Oscar was because the Academy made a mistake and was feeling sorry for it.
Third, Avatar 2 will win for Technical Awards, Cameron’s got his Oscar he’s not getting another one. Ever.
Fourth, Top Gun might win for best editing. They usually give that to the film they think should have won best picture, but they are too snobby to give it to. Classic example, Marsha Lucas winning Best Editing for Star Wars (1977). Annie Hall got best picture that year and Woody Allen didn’t show up for the award.
Forgive me for stating the obvious but these two films accounted for ONE-THIRD of 2022’s total box office. They may well have saved the American film industry (pity), and they get the apology awards. Ah well, gratitude is rare in princes and unknown in Tinsel Town.
Fifth, Everything, Everywhere, All at Once will win for everything, everywhere all on Oscar night. That’s an easy call.
My final prediction already came true. The pro-nationalist RRR got completely snubbed for every single award the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences offers.
Because they instinctively hate something anti-globalist with aspirational heroes as leads.
If the Prince of Earth resides anywhere on Earth, his throne is Hollywood.
