Looks Better Than Snyderverse Superman
My opinions:
I don’t think a single movie has ever had so much riding on it or had so many things going against it.
Marvel doesn’t have anything warming up in the batter’s box that’s going to make any money. Sam Wilson’s Captain America movie has cost so much to make it would have to pull in $2 billion before it could see a profit and it’s not going to be doing that. The Thunderbolts is already dead and buried. Avengers Secret Wars is the movie where Marvel will bring back all the white male actors they got rid of but they’ve been hanging around since 2008, they’ve all aged out of their roles.
If Superman bombs the superhero movie goes back in the box. Probably until he goes into Public Domain in 2034
Frankly, there is a fuck ton of people rooting for this film to fail.
The juggalos of fandom the Snyderverse fans were dead against this movie the day their boy got shitcanned for good.
The Cavill simps are will never forgive James Gunn for firing their favorite thirst trap. I’m a fan of Henry myself but the fact is he just turned forty so unless you’re doing a version of Kingdom Come he’s aged out of the role. Amy Adams has just turned 50 so she was definetly too old to play Lois Lane.
There are also a lot of people that want anything from Hollywood to fail at this point. They don’t care what it is.
Blue Staters know that if Superman is done right then Clark White Boy Kent from Smallville Kansas was probably a Trump voter.
Quite a few Hollywood edgelords have always hated superheroes because they are disgusting people in their private life and are repelled by the very concept of heroism. And truth be told I am certain that in his deepest heart James Gunn is one of them. This is the guy who produced Bright Burn (which was written by his brother and his cousin).
The Bright Burn thing is my biggest concern since it was an invertion of Superman’s origin story where Superboy turns out to be a super powered abomination.
“Although it’s not officially a Superman movie, it walks viewers through every step of Clark Kent‘s origin story before taking a hard left turn.”
It was generally torched by critics but there were a few who liked the basic premise enough to overlook it’s glaring technical flaws. “The film is a gem, especially for anyone yearning for a superhero film that gleefully torches the familiar ‘good versus evil’ formula and introduces far more sinister sensibilities.” I’m rather certain that Gunn sees the world through the same lens as those people.
Richard Donner loved Mom, Apple Pie and the American Flag. He was the perfect choice to direct Superman The Movie.
He has never delivered a character who would be an aspirational paragon archetype.
Does this movie have anything going for it?
It would have to deliver. So, assuming it delivers, DC Comics fans will turn out in droves becasue there has always been a much larger core of Advocate Fans (in case you want to know what an advocate fan is click on this link to my post on Fan Heriarchy).
A strong core of Advocates will bring in Intentionalists and then Culturalists. The Flirts won’t show up until the next movie.
If Gunn defies my expectations and gets this right, then it will have a slow first weekend but fairly long legs. I don’t think it will crack a billion unless Supermania somehow takes hold.
If it’s all edgy dark humor then it will bomb and DC may well go up for sale. That will not be Zaslav’s decsion, he’s divded up the company and will undoubteldy go back to being the TV guy.
This film is DC’s last chance.
