Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Off to A Weak Start
Well it’s not in Antman 3 territory, you got to give it that.
The third of the Guardians of the Galaxy is tracking to pull in $114 million domestic. Plus an FBO of $168 million for a worldwide total of $282 million.
Against a budget of $250 million. Meaning it will have to break 500 million just to cover the production. Pulling a number out of my butt, I will put the promotional budget at an additional $250 million, (which honestly feels light to me given how hard Disney is pushing this one). Meaning it will need (at least) $750 million before it’s in the black.
That is possible but Marvel films have been having steep fall-offs in the second week for the last few years. Usually around 60%. If GotG pulls that low of a second week, it’s a bomb.
Now that said, a bomb is not guaranteed. Unlike Antman and the Wasp: Quantomania, there is actual positive buzz from people who aren’t paid to love it. On the other hand, there isn’t a lot of it. The general sentiment is, I was entertained by it but I’m not going to watch it again.
I will try to get my own review up tomorrow but I am making no guarantees whatsoever. My weekend went boom and I’ll have to catch a midnight show. And stay awake all the way through it.
Bottomline: With such a weak first weekend box office it all comes down to what kind of legs this movie has. If it has a strong second weekend it will be in the running to make a profit but as of now, I’m saying it won’t crack the $ 1 Billion mark.
