Arkhaven Spotlight: Paper Doll Veronika

Arkhaven Spotlight: Paper Doll Veronika

Welcome to the Arktoons Spotlight, a regular feature at the Arkhaven Blog. The Spotlight is where I take a look at one title from the amazing world of Arkhaven’s webtoons.

If you aren’t familiar with Arktoons, this is meant for you.  I am the Dark Herald; I do the blogging here at Arkhaven.com.  The blog is mostly pop culture news, reviews, and opinion, in short, the usual.

And you aren’t here for the blog.  You’re here for the webtoons.

Arkhaven is different from other webtoons publishers.  While we have the kind of webtoons you would expect, like Chateau Grief we also have works that are more like traditional comics, if you grew up reading comic books in pamphlet format, you’ll feel more at home here than you would at say Tapas.io or Webtoons.com.

So, if you are new here, be welcome.

Veronika is a princess whose mansion had seven rooms, one day seven beasts from her garden invade her home and throw her out because they felt that it wasn’t right that there was only one of her and there were seven empty rooms. She sets out to find seven beings to inhabit her home and throw the beasts of the garden out of her mansion.

Paper Doll Veronika is one of those things that you will only find at Arktoons. Mary MacArthur has delivered for us a story very reminiscent of the old style of the tales of faerie, the kind of story where one Cinderella’s stepsisters cuts off her toe and the other her heel trying to fit into the slipper and their punishment was to have their eyes pecked out. Where Snow White’s Evil Queen was forced to wear red hot iron shoes until she died from dancing herself to death.

Don’t get me wrong it isn’t that dark. Not quite. You just get a very strong feeling that this story being told with paper dolls is trying to cover up something that was just a bit more gruesome.

PAPER DOLL VERONIKA -Mary MacArthur: Veronika Bosch, who’s never left her father’s estate, has to go on a journey when envious animals kick her out. Half collage, half puppetry, the traditional media equivalent of an elaborate sprite comic.
