Arkhaven Spotlight: Give My Regards to Black Jack
One of the biggest reasons that Manga has completely buried the American comic book industry is that American comics are extremely limited in its audience. The comic book guys are pretty much it. If you like superheroes or to be more accurate diverse and inclusive superheroes then the big two has got your back fam.
However, in Japan if you like superheroes there’s a manga for you. If you’re a toddler there’s a manga for you. If you are a teenage girl there’s a manga for you. If you are an 85 year old granny there is a manga for you.
There is a manga for every demographic in existence and probably a few for those that don’t.
Before I can tell you about Give My Regards to Black Jack I need to tell you about Black Jack.
Black Jack was legendary Osama Tezuka’s second best known manga only after Astro Boy. It was quite simply about a seriously bad ass anime doctor.
“Most of the stories involve Black Jack doing some good deed, for which he rarely gets recognition—often curing the poor and destitute for free, or teaching the arrogant a lesson in humility. They sometimes end with a good, humane person enduring hardship, often unavoidable death, to save others.”
Black Jack ran during the 1970s and has repeatedly been made into animes and OAVs. If you know anything about manga at all then you are undoubetedly a aquianted with it.
Give My Regards to Black Jack is very well known in Japan but much less so here, largely because it has to do with the major problems with Japan’s medical system. There is every indication those problems are being imported into the USA so it’s more than high time to give Arkhaven’s new webtoon a look.
You always gotta love a story with a cigarette smoking doctor in it.
Give My Regards to Black Jack— Written by award winning author Shuho Sato, Give My Regards to Black Jack is a long running manga series about corruption within the Japanese medical industry. The series has sold over ten million copies worldwide.
