Vampire Rules (Part IV): Woke Dracula

(Bumped for Halloween 2022, hence the stuff about Jodie Whitaker) Doctor Who’s season finale was a nosedive in the ratings for that series. It didn’t even crack 4 million viewers in the UK and it only hauled in about 400,000 of the Whovian faithful in America. These are the lowest numbers yet. Jodie Whittaker’s turn as the Time Lord (Lady?) has been a ratings disaster.  She is reliably rumored to be bailing. (Rumor confirmed, she did) It’s not her fault… Not entirely...

NEXT Disney is trapped by its own Woke culture.  There is a rumor running around that I would grade at a “B” for reliability, that Storm from the X-Men is going to be spliced into Wakanda Forever. Why the late addition? Well, the problem Disney has right now is that Marvel has killed another cash cow with Black Panther. Apparently, that decision had been made even before Chadwick Boseman’s condition was known to the company.  Disney Marvel...

The Dark Herald Does Not Recommend Hocus Pocus 2

The original Hocus Pocus honestly wasn’t something I cared about.  But I can understand why people liked it.  It started life as a Disney Channel Halloween movie and it kind of shows. But Disney thought they had something, so they bumped up the budget and gave it a theatrical release.  It didn’t do much at the box office, so Disney shrugged and put Hocus Pocus in rotation alongside Halloween Town every October.  It quickly became a Halloween favorite in an age that wasn’t making...

Vampire Rules (Part III): Kolchak – The Night Stalker

BUMPED for Halloween A man in a cheap suit that would be the envy of every Millenial Hipster on the planet, walks into an office setting that they would envy even more. He is whistling a happy and carefree little tune while he pours himself a cup of coffee that no hipster would touch with a thousand-foot pole.  The man throws his cheap straw, trilby at a hat rack, and misses it completely while bossa nova music begins to play along...

RE:Play Clive Barker’s Undying

"[Undying]'s a dark fantasy with lots of levels, lots of realities in it. It's not horror in the sense of Hellraiser. It's horror which is very bloody, very graphic, with plenty of monsters, no question; but also a big adventure level in it. There is the sense, as you are visiting different dimensions and alien cities, that a monster in an alien city is a different thing than a monster sitting in your kitchen sink!” – Clive Barker Clive Barker isn’t...

Vampire Rules (Part II)

In 1931 Universal Film Studios was faced with a fairly serious problem.   They had a decision to make and no matter what that decision was, they were going to lose money on it.  They had to do it now, they couldn't put it off any longer.  Al Jolson's The Jazz Singer (1927) had completely rewritten the rule book. It was a rulebook that was only about 15 years old, but it was out the window now.  The technical problems of synching audio and...

Vampire Rules (Part I)

REPOST: It's Halloween season so a few things are getting bumped for the next few days. “I am quite convinced that there is no doubt whatever that the events here described really took place, however unbelievable and incomprehensible they might appear at first sight. And I am further convinced that they must always remain to some extent incomprehensible.” – Bram Stoker I debated calling this piece Vampire Rules Suck.   Nominal good taste won out.  Midnight’s War is the Arkhaven title that currently holds my...

Red Sonja Looks Promising

I capped this from star Mathilda Lutz's Instagram. It looks like this is actually being made which I find astonishing. Red Sonja has been in development hell for better than 15 years. It might be something even if the director wasn't quite was I hoping for. From my first post on the subject: I had long since abandoned all hope for that project.  It was clearly and obviously going to be dripping with Woke.  One of the writers was Tasha Huo, whose only credit...
