Arktoons Spotlight: Bovadar and the Bears
Welcome to the Arktoons Spotlight, a regular feature at the Arkhaven Blog. The Spotlight is where I take a look at one title from the amazing world of Arkhaven’s webtoons.

Arkhaven is different from other webtoon publishers. While we have the kind of webtoons you would expect, like Chateau Grief we also have works that are more like traditional comics, if you grew up reading comic books in pamphlet format, you’ll feel more at home here than you would at say Tapas.io or Webtoons.com.

Bovadar. Given name. Slavic derivation of Theodore.
Theodore: Given name. Greek in origin. Meaning; gift from God.
I’ve been taking an interest in Slavic folk tales in the past year. They are as unquestionably their own thing as the myths and legends of the Norse and the Celts and just as distinct with their own recognizable tropes. It is much closer to nature. Shaministic or perhaps even animistic.
The Slavic pre-Chrisitian chief god was named Perun who ruled the living world from the highest branches of the World Tree. His opposite was Veles, god of the rivers and waters and ruled his realm from the roots of the World Tree for Veles realm was the world of the dead.
Then there is Morena, goddess of Death. But like Maha Khali of Hindustan, she is more complicated than a simple reaper of lives. Morena is the daughter of Lada, goddess of Spring and new life, as such joins Winter and death together into the rebirth of Spring. She represents the different stages of life.
When the Slavs became Christian, Morena would become known as the Baba Yaga.

Bovodar & The Bears — What would you do if two angry bears came pounding on your door, demanding that you hurry out to meet them? That’s the dilemma for Bovodar Yarkery, who is confronted one day with a gathering of bears who wish to carry him off on their grand adventure. Across hazardous deserts, through caverns, and far up through the forests into the cold North, there stands Kalas Hall, home of an evil polar bear lord, King Valemod. The path is long, perilous, and uncertain, but if Bovodar & the Bears succeed in their mission, untold glory and riches can be theirs… but only if they can overcome the dangers that await them.
