First Impressions: Secret Invasion

Usual disclaimer, this is not a review. I will not do a proper review of Secret Invasion until after the series wraps. I have had to institute this rule specifically because of Marvel TV shows. They usually start off acceptable or in the case of Moon Knight, even good. They stumble badly in the second episode and by the third, yep, it's a Marvel show. In this case, I don't need to worry about that as much...

Cheap Thrills: The Games Edition

AAA game releases in 2023 have reached new heights of incompetence.  There is $0.99 shovelware out there that is truthfully more technically adept than Red Fall or Gollum.  While Red Fall was at least hilariously incompetent (and therefore had some entertainment value), Gollum was depressingly so. Was either worth the price? I will grant that Hogwarts Legacy did indeed achieve the minimum acceptable level of performance, certainly better than the 11 frames per second that Red Fall achieved… On the minimum freaking settings.   And I’ve...

John Romita Sr. 1930-2023

I should have covered this last week but I had a lot of personal issues got in the way. John Romita Sr was a legendary Marvel artist. He's up there with Adams and Kirby. He made his biggest mark on Spiderman and the funny thing.is he didn't really want the job. He was assigned to the web-slinger when Ditko walked away from the project. He figured it was a temporary gig and grimly set about churning out Ditko pastiche...

The Dark Herald Does Not Recommend: The Flash

Maybe there is an alternate universe where DC films are getting the respect they deserve.  In that world, someone at Warner Brothers had the sense god gave a chicken and made a film series based on the Justice League cartoons of the 00s. In that world, there was a proper build-up for the longest and best-established superheroes in comics, Henry Cavil has had a great run as the Man of Steel, Batman is dark and engaging, Zach Snyder was never involved...

Box Office Aftermath

Welcome to Black Monday, or given the financials involved Red Monday.  We have two flops today for the price of one. Pixar’s Elemental pulled in its expected anemic performance of $29.5 million domestic and a much worse $15 million foreign.  The total for what is quietly being rumored to be Pixar’s last round-up at less than $45 million for the global take against a budget of $250 million.  Normally marketing costs would double the budget but not in this case because advertising money was...

Science Fiction Shows of the 1970s: Future Man!!!

The Future Man was an odd little trope in the TV science fiction of the 1970s. And no, I am not referring to Steve Austin or Buck Rogers.  Nor was there any show specifically named Future Man…(*pauses, googling*)… Okay, there was no 1970s show specifically named Future man.  What I am referring to is the various highly evolved men that came back from the future to lecture us about not taking care of the Earth or not ending capitalism or permitting bad things to happen...

She Must Have Something on Everyone

Phoebe Waller-Bridge has successfully jumped from the sinking Indiana Jones franchise before it goes underwater or even (technically) hit the iceberg yet. She will continue her rampage through the pop culture which she clearly doesn't like, has never been a part of, and has no interest in beyond the stream of paychecks that get sent her way. Having been instrumental in the destruction of Star Wars, James Bond, and Indiana Jones, Phoebe is moving on to video games. From:

The Disney Calendar Is Now At Year Zero

One of the things that made Walt Disney very different from other producers of his age was his sense of history.  Most of Hollywood studios simply couldn’t begin to care less about that. As soon as the film is finished get rid of the props, and hopefully, you can make a dime to two doing it. Walt had a vision of himself as one of the Big Americans, that his name would be remembered with men like Ford and Edison. Whether he...
