The Dark Herald Recommends Squid Game

I’ve heard several reviewers claiming this series is like Battle Royale. It’s not.   It’s The Prisoner with a high body count and lots of gore. *** Spoilers from here on out. *** The title comes from a children’s game in Korea that is roughly analogous to King of the Hill.  It’s a last-man-standing kid’s game.  Although there is apparently some cultural significance to squids being an “unclean food” that I don’t understand, so that part is lost on me and most Americans.  It also doesn’t matter because...

I’m Back From the Dead…

... And I've brought someone with me! I always wanted to use that line. Anyway, the other living dead in question is John Lasseter. Who in all of ten minutes absolutely and completely owns his former company. Remember when Pixar could actually make something that could touch the heart? I know, I know it's been a while but there was a time it could make you laugh and cry in the space of a few minutes. And Lasseter...

The Dark Herald Recommends Ford Vs Ferrari

Nothing pisses me off more than coming in Second. If I take third place, I’m still unhappy but I’m also calm and resigned. Show, was clearly going to happen long before I got to the end.  The game didn’t develop right.  I threw the dice on a play that didn’t work out.  The opportunity to pull ahead was never there.  Plain old bad luck is a genuine factor.  Like I said, unhappy but calm and resigned. I knew what was coming. Second place leaves me seething.  I...

Cleopatra: A Nationalist Heroine

REPOST: Still sick and yearning for death. Enjoy some more Best of the Dark Herald. Or don't. I honestly couldn't care less. Cleopatra VII would make for an intriguing Nationalist heroine today.  Her entire life was spent fighting for her country’s nationhood. It was a fight she lost but she gave it literally everything she had. The last native Egyptian dynasty ended when Psamtik III was defeated in the Persian invasion.  He was carried off in chains and later “committed suicide.”...

James Bond Dies In This Movie

Oops. ***Spoiler Alert*** If you are curious about the Rotten Tomatoes Score it is: 83% Critic's Score (of course) 00% Audience (RT is not reporting audience scores. I wonder fucking why?) UPDATE: This wouldn't have been the disaster it's going to be if EON had made it clear in Casino Royale that James Bond is a cover identity that has been passed from agent to agent since WWII. Think about it, Ian Flemming's original Bond would have had to have been...

RE:View – Ichabod and Mister Toad

Normally I limit REViews to fantasy and science fiction films from the 1980s. But I can make exceptions. After the massive success of Snow White, Walt Disney had two major bombs, Pinocchio and Fantasia. The Wind in the Willows (a children’s classic from Great Britain,) had been in development but when the Animator’s Strike (AKA the attempted Communist takeover of Disney) started everything was put on hold.  Disney Studios was about to fold, much to the delight of the Communist-run Screenwriter’s...

Jon Bernthal Returning to Punisher?

Well maybe. Small Screen is reporting that Disney has a Punisher series in development for Hulu. "First, it claims that Marvel Studios is aggressively negotiating with Jon Bernthal to have him reprise the role of Frank Castle. (Small Screen) claims, 'The word around the Marvel camp is that Jon Bernthal really wants to play The Punisher again but has been negotiating hard on the contract.' The scooper then notes, 'They’re developing a series for The Punisher and desperately negotiating to have Jon Bernthal come...
